What can you do if your insurance company delays, denies or diminishes the payment you deserve? Filing a complaint with your states insurance commissioner is one action you can take.
In Georgia the Insurance Commissioner Ralph Hudgens takes his responsibility to protect to citizens seriously. Wednesday, June 18th the Associated Press reported that Commissioner Hudgens office recovered more than $2.1m for policyholders in just the first quarter of 2014. In addition to recovering $2.1m for policyholders, the commissioner’s office also answered complaints from more than 4,000 citizens of the state in the same three-month period.
Hudgens says the department has helped retrieve more than $32 million for consumers since he took office in 2011.
While everyone prefers that insurance claims and loss compensation be a business void of hard feelings and yield only happy consumers, that isn’t always the result. Investigating complaints by consumers is one of the key functions of all state insurance commissioners. While commissioners tackle this part of their job with differing levels of zeal, it is clear that commissioner Hudgens takes his role seriously and is making a positive difference for consumers.

To urge all state commissioners to do the complaint investigation aspect of job with the zeal and enthusiasm of commissioner Hudgens, we recommend the National Association of Insurance Commissioners give special recognition to Commissioner Hudgens. Acknowledging state commissioners that are the most effective in complaint investigation would have a positive impact on both insurers and the people of the state the commissioner represents.
